Meet the Hilbers Team
Kurt Hilbers, CEO
Kurt is the CEO of Hilbers, Inc., a second-generation family-grown construction and developer operation, that, under his leadership, has grown into a national company with multiple locations, more than 100 employees, and annual revenues of more than $150 m.
In the Yuba-Sutter region, Kurt is known for being a family man, community leader, and supporter, with both his time and financial resources. He serves on the board of several organizations and has been a significant funder of the Salvation Army, Craftsmen for Christ, 4G Foundation, The Rotary Club of Yuba City, SAYLove, and the newly established Blue Zones Project.
Kurt earned his Bachelor of Science, B.A. from California State University, Chico, and assumed the CEO mantle in 1983 upon the retirement of Hilbers founder, Leroy Hilbers.
Dave Vaughn – Executive Leader at Hilbers, Inc.
Dave Vaughn and his family have proudly called Yuba City home since June 1997. With nearly four decades of leadership experience across both public and private sectors, Dave brings a seasoned perspective to every organization he serves. His career spans a diverse range of industries, and most recently, he has focused his expertise in the private equity space—guiding companies through complex challenges and fostering sustainable growth.
Now at Hilbers, Inc., Dave brings a wealth of knowledge in business leadership along with a deep understanding of Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs). His insights will be instrumental in helping the company achieve its vision of becoming the best-in-class contractor
of choice.
Deeply rooted in the Yuba-Sutter community, Dave has served on numerous boards and commissions, reflecting his ongoing commitment to public service and regional development. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management and a Master of Public Administration.
Dave and his wife, Linda, have two sons. Their eldest, Lucas, lives nearby and works as a project manager in construction management in Sacramento. Their youngest, Jared, also resides in the area and is also involved in the construction industry.
Dave is excited to contribute his leadership and experience to Hilbers, Inc., focusing on building upon the company’s strong legacy and supporting its employee-owners for continued success.
Matt Sheeran, Chief Financial Officer
Matt joined the Hilbers team in 2018. Matt has more than 20 years of extensive financial, accounting and business management experience made him an incredible fit for the organization and its current and future financial and development management needs.
In previous roles Matt excelled in managing large, diverse portfolio’s, up to more than a billion dollars in assets, and was recognized for his development of several tools and processes that led to increased efficiencies.
Now, as an important member of the leadership team, Hilbers, Inc. benefits from Matt’s expertise and unique skillsets.
The impact he has made includes the standardization of processes to ensure tight controls and compliance to eliminate risk of fraud; reduced days outstanding of receivables by 21 days; the improvement of processing time of processing payments by 20% and the avoidance of over $250,000 of
fraudulent checks.
Additionally, Matt has been responsible for the creation of monthly forecast reviews of all active projects with internal stakeholders to maximize profitability and mitigate risk, detected over $2 million of recoverable expenses that was unknown at the time and identified potential schedule delays to alert executive management to adjust resources, avoid delays.
Matt is truly a professional dedicated to the success and sustainability of the organization and its clients and his efforts on its behalf are greatly appreciated.
Matt received his Master of Business Administration, concentration in Finance, Accounting and Strategic Management from the University of California, Davis
Glenn Hilbers, Project Executive
Glenn is a Partner and Project Executive at Hilbers, Inc. He is responsible for oversight of the project teams, takes the lead in interaction with clients and other stakeholders, manages deadlines, and budgets, and develops relationships with vendors and partner businesses.
In his more than 35 years with Hilbers, Glenn has continuously shown the depth of his knowledge and expertise in the commercial construction industry through the successful execution of an extensive number of local, regional, and national projects.
A significant strength is Glenn’s dedication to the client, and he maintains a sterling reputation with Hilbers’ client base. He was and continues to be, the lead in the development and oversight of Hilbers extensive national gym & fitness projects portfolio.
Glenn is a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and is passionate about supporting his local community.
John Fitch, Project Executive
John joined Hilbers in 1996. He has extensive experience in the construction industry, managing all aspects of the pre-construction and construction process. John has successfully completed a vast array of very complicated projects through his career. In addition, John values relationships and has created long standing relationships with clients, leading to Hilbers working with many repeat clients.
John was promoted to Project Executive in 2023, which came with the responsibility of overseeing 4 teams of project managers. John utilizes his extensive construction knowledge to provide leadership, insight and support for Hilbers projects, resulting in project success and solid execution. John is a devoted husband and father and lives locally in Sutter, CA.

Annie Knipe, Senior Business Development Manager
Annie joined the Hilbers team in 2018 after 10 years as an entrepreneur and business owner.
Her experience in building and sustaining a successful business was a natural segway to her role in business development. Over the last number of years, Annie has developed and grown the business development department, expanding the organization's outreach and enhancing its brand.
Annie has provided oversight to the development and launch of numerous successful marketing campaigns, with a focus on the expansion of Hilbers market share in key industry sectors. 2022 saw the launch of Hilbers new website and the cultivation of new regional and national opportunities.
With her drive and warm and infectious personality, Annie is leading the Hilbers business development team into a future rich with possibility.
Ashley Carr, Safety Director
Ashley joined the Hilbers team in 2024, bringing with her a wealth of experience from her career in safety, which began years ago when she transitioned from Human Resources to Environmental Health and Safety. Throughout this transition, her deep understanding of local, state, and federal regulations has enabled her to become a versatile employee, dedicated to helping others navigate regulatory compliance with ease.
Her expertise in business process development and regulation compliance, combined with her passion for educating others through training, led her to the role of Safety Director. In this role, Ashley continues to grow and evolve, bringing a fresh perspective to her work as an Environmental Health and Safety officer. Her passion for people, along with her focus on structure and compliance, makes her an invaluable asset to our team.
With her confidence and eagerness to grow within our industry, Ashley is projected to be an excellent addition to our team.
Bill Cantrell, Operations Manager
Bill joined Hilbers, Inc. as a General Superintendent in 2019 but his career in construction began years earlier at the young age of 14 working for his father, a residential general contractor.
His strong work ethic and growing skillset were evident even then and Bill was promoted to Foreman just after graduating high school.
Fast forward and Bill was promoted again to Project Superintendent, and another 12 years later, to General Superintendent.
The intermittent years of experience included oversight of a diverse portfolio of private and federal projects ranging from QSR tenant improvements and ground-up builds to retail centers, anchor brand buildouts, carwashes, theme parks, up to $30m high-end hotels, and more.
Bill's portfolio of work includes projects that have generated recognition for General Contractor Builder of the Year as well as the successful execution of the very skill-challenging retail and grocery builds in tight urban locations.
Over the last 7 years as a General Superintendent, Bill has been able to utilize his experiences to help mentor and guide his teammates by employing GC toward the successful completion of a diverse range of projects.
He prides himself in creating and building excellent relationships with a wide range of clientele and localities.
Jeff Clayton, General Superintendent
Jeff Clayton began his journey with Hilbers in February 2015.
His immersion into the construction world commenced at the age of 10 when his father, a biology professor and skilled carpenter, involved him in building a laboratory at Rosario Beach Marine Biology Station. A notable image from the college publication captured young Jeff, wearing a hardhat, alongside his father supervising construction activities, perhaps foreshadowing his future path in the industry.
At 12, Jeff's family relocated to the Philippines, where he had the opportunity to work under Sam Robinson, the Director of Construction for a new university campus. Over the course of three years, Jeff dedicated his afternoons to learning various aspects of construction, receiving hands-on instruction in welding, equipment operation, and other skills.
Upon returning to the United States and settling in Texas, Jeff continued to expand his construction experience. Throughout high school, he worked as a laborer on construction sites during after-school hours and summers.
Following a four-year stint in the Marine Corps from 1983 to 1987, Jeff transitioned into civilian life and began his professional career in construction. He initially worked with a wood framing contractor, gaining valuable experience in both commercial and residential projects. Later, he joined Anderson Mercer Glass and Drywall, where he honed his skills in various trades, including drywall installation, metal stud framing, and acoustical ceilings.
Jeff's expertise continued to evolve, and after approximately six years with Anderson Mercer, he was presented with an opportunity to oversee a project as a general contractor. This marked the beginning of a 32-year journey filled with diverse projects spanning across the country.
Throughout his career, Jeff has held various roles, including General Superintendent in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, before eventually relocating to California.
Scott Schmidt, Service Team Director
Scott Schmidt, Director of the Service Team, joined Hilbers in January 2024. He embarked on his construction journey at the age of 16, captivated by the intricacies of building and how things come together. Over the next 8 years, he delved into various trades while pursuing his education in Illinois.
Upon returning to California, Scott briefly explored the tech industry but found solace in hands-on work, often spending weekends constructing decks and replacing fences. With over 30 years of experience, his focus has predominantly been on renovations, starting with bathrooms and gradually expanding to encompass kitchens, whole house remodels, and additions.
Scott's career led him to Colorado, where he obtained his GC license and established a business specializing in finishing basements. His passion for creating tangible structures in a comfortable environment persisted, drawing him back to California in 2002. Here, he ventured into repairing houses within a real estate investment partnership.
Eager to broaden his horizons, Scott transitioned to the commercial sector in 2005, joining a contracting firm. Starting as a field technician, he cultivated strong relationships with customers' facilities and operations managers, which endure to this day. His dedication and expertise propelled him through the ranks, leading to promotions as Superintendent and later Project Manager.
In 2013, Scott made a pivotal shift from construction to service, assuming the role of Field Service Manager. This transition marked a turning point in his career, offering new challenges and opportunities to apply his diverse skill set to address customers' service and maintenance needs.
The dynamic nature of his role, characterized by a fast-paced environment and a wide array of requests from diverse clientele, fuels Scott's passion and determination. Together with his team, he thrives on the constant challenge, ensuring that customer needs are met round-the-clock.
Outside of work, Scott treasures spending time with his wife, four children, and two dogs. His interests include travel, automotive tinkering, and tackling minor home repairs.
Conrad Luna, Hilbers New Homes Manager
Conrad has been in the building industry for over 4 decades. Over his career, Conrad has supervised over two hundred residential projects, including custom homes and major remodels. He has built several multi-unit projects throughout Northern California. As a project Manager for Hilbers New Home Communities, he oversees the day-to-day operations.
